Join Our Team |
|
| Thank you for your
interest in becoming a part of a very rewarding volunteer activity!
|
| Please read the information
below to discover if volunteering for our team is something you'd like to
do: |
| |
| Who's on
the team? |
- Team members include
men, women, students, professionals, labourers, retirees, community
leaders, etc. who live in the Bay of Islands area.
|
| How is the
team organized? |
- Our team consists
of an executive board elected to a two-year term by the members, and
a general membership of 30+ men and women.
|
|
| How often
does the team meet? |
- BOISAR
meets every other Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Corner Brook. We
ask that each team member be prepared for outdoor activity at each meeting,
as we usually have training assignments. We also do a few weekend
training sessions per year, and we attend the annual Newfoundland and
Labrador Search and Rescue weekend in Kildevil Camp at Gros Morne National
Park during the summer.
|
|
| Do I have
to have any qualifications to join the team? |
- No.
Our team has a specialized training program designed to prepare people
for the tasks we might encounter on missions. This includes search
techniques, equipment operation, map and compass, first aid courses,
and many other areas of operations. You must be 18 years of age
or older to join the team.
|
|
| Do I have
to have any special equipment or clothing? |
- We do not expect
new members joining the team to come to their first meeting armed with
everything necessary! However, you should be aware that as time
goes by you will be expected to outfit yourself with the items necessary
for safe searching. This gear is not paid for by the team.
This includes at the bare minimum a compass, clothing for all weather
conditions (including snowshoes), and a pack that contains survival
items for emergency situations. Any additional equipment that
you possess such as a snowmobile, ATV, 4 x 4 etc would be an asset to
the team.
|
|
| What happens
if there's a search during my work hours? |
- Many
employers will make arrangements for you to be away from work without
negative recourse. As an active team member, you will be provided
with documentation of your membership.
|
|
| How do I
join? |
- Simply click here
to contact our Coordinator, Shawn Street, to begin attending regular
meetings. Upon arrival at your first meeting you will be asked
to fill out forms with personal information so that you may be added
to our insurance and call-out rosters.
